Marras hanepoot wine label illustration

Illustrated baboons eating grapes with Marras wine logo between them

Marras ‘Was Jou Hanepoot’ is a dry white wine made from Muscat d’Alexandria grapes, locally known in South Africa as ‘Hanepoot’, a grape variety the wild baboons are known to go crazy for.

Farmers will tell you how baboons will stroll right past vineyards full of the best Sauvignon Blanc or Shiraz grapes but put their bodies on the line to steal Hanepoot grapes right off the farmer's kitchen table.

The concept for the illustration was to capture just that - a baboon enjoying his favourite juicy loot, accompanied by the equally cheeky pun, Was Jou Hanepoot. It combines “was jou hande” (Afrikaans for “wash your hands”) + the wine variety “hanepoot” as a little reminder for the year of 2020 that we all needed to keep washing our hands to curb the spread of COVID-19.

We refer to this vintage as a ‘kop sanitiser’ [Afrikaans for ‘head sanitiser’] on the back label because sometimes a glass of wine is all you need to keep things in perspective when the pressure is on.
